Webb4 jan. 2016 · Slow cranking. One of the first signs of a problem with the battery is a slow cranking engine. If the battery is low, it may not have enough power to turn the engine as quickly as it normally would, and it will crank slowly as a result. Sometimes the terminals can be too loose as well. Whenever these issues come up, you will have a cranking engine that does not start.
Webb13 feb. 2016 · Somewhat slower cranking is to be expected in cold weather since the battery is a chemical device and isn’t able to produce quite as much power in cold weather as warm weather. And the engine parts are cold and the oil is cold, that all adds friction, which could slow the cranking rpm somewhat. Webb17 jan. 2024 · Last week I went to start my 97 6.5 and it was cranking normally for a bit and then suddenly slowed dramatically. I attached jumper cables and it fired right up. Next time the same thing happened. I had the batteries tested and battery health was low. So I replaced with new batteries and I was surprised the cranking was still slow.

It turned out that the head gasket had failed and hydrolocked a couple of cylinders.
